The Business of Designing Websites

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

This is one of the more interesting fields to make money from because there are so many different ways to do it. Some people are more successful than others at it, sort of like working the stock market, but the majority to well enough regardless. How to make money designing websites depends on a few things, more than just skill or luck, such as the know-how.

If you’re the “9-5″ type, then perhaps the option for you is to work for a company. You could design a website for a company specifically and be responsible for the original design as well as updating it as it changes. You’ll find them by looking for an advertisement for “web masters” or something to that effect.

You could be employed by a company that has contracts to design websites for other companies. The work is more stable, as you’re designing other websites, not just one. And the work comes from contracts you aren’t responsible for.

There’s also the option of self-employment. This would mean you have to put your name out there. It helps to have a logo, business cards, your own website, portfolio, or some combination of the above.

Having a logo or a signature or some sort of mark on a website is a very important thing for the self-employed designer. This mark will show up on every website that you design. The more you design, the more often your logo/signature shows up, the more people see it.

Making money from self employment can be a difficult and very poor choice (financially) if you’re finding it hard to get your name out there. You’ll need people to hear about you some how, so not having a logo will severely hinder you ability to attract more customers and contracts, as it reflects your popularity.

Of course, the easiest method of choice, albeit the most boring, is to go into advertising. Going into advertising means using your site (or a site) to put advertisements on for other companies. You put their ad on your site and you’ll get money based on it’s popularity.

Alternatively, you could design a website that sells either your product or the product or someone else. It’s the most complicated because you become more than just a designer, but also an entrepreneur. If you sell for someone else, then you can charge a commission, all, once again, based on popularity.

Variety certainly is the spice of life, and designers will always have that. It’s an easy profession to get into and not hard to get good at. The methods for how to make money designing websites, themselves, may be better or worse depending on what you’re willing to do or what you want to get out of it, but any method can work. It all comes down to each person’s individual drive.

With your new freedom since you started your website design business, you can get Netflix coupon to watch some movies to kill time.
