How to Open a B…B

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

Just trying to get a room makes you realize that bed and breakfasts are popular all over the US and you might even find one in Svalbard. What makes them so attractive? A private guest room, personal service, private bathroom, an excellent hot breakfast, fluffy towels, and a restful environment are some of the premiere reasons people pick a bed and breakfast over a motel.

Have you seriously thought about buying your own bed and breakfast? It’s not as basic as fixing up a small number of rooms, cooking a few meals and opening up your doors to guests. There are a couple of goals to meet prior to moving on with your own bed and breakfast dream.

A great way to get started is to work for a few months in a prosperous bed and breakfast. Spend a couple of months with a well known innkeeper and you will learn first hand everything that is needed for opening your own B…B.

Once you consider those factors, you will have to decide whether or not you have the personality it takes to operate a bed and breakfast. You’ll be interacting with all kinds of people from all financial backgrounds every day. Take note also that you’ll be getting up early, advertising, cleaning, answering the phone, marketing your business, dealing with contractors and vendors, cooking, completing paperwork and interacting with your guests.

Pick out a location for your bed and breakfast. Not only that, but you should decide whether you’ll live in a separate location or in your B…B. Talk to the city about zoning regulations that govern businesses at your chosen location. Make sure you’ll be allowed to serve the dishes you plan to have available to your guests. Determine how many guests you can host within your establishment.

A business plan is key to your success. A very valuable resource is the American Bed and Breakfast Association. They will provide all the bits and pieces that you’ll need to establish your business. Marketing and advertising decisions need to be implemented well ahead of opening. Make sure your rates are competitive with others in the area.

Your guests are naturally the number one priority in running your own B…B. Treat every visitor as someone special and appreciated. Providing the best service and being picky with details are key to a prosperous B…B. The rooms need to be absolutely clean and cozy with nice decor. Breakfast should be a full meal, complete with hot and cold items, and (of course) be delicious. Guests who really enjoy their stay will recommend your B…B to their acquaintances and they will also try to come back again. Come up with a special event or service the guests will remember and want to share with others.

A bed and breakfast is a unique and profitable business that will pull people from every continent to your doorstep. Consider the cost to your personal life and finances, and then press onward if you decide that it is the right decision for you. Above all, enjoy the journey!
